Talking About
ADPKD

Open up, be active, be vocal, be heard!

Reach out to others

Surrounding yourself with loved ones is the best way to support yourself. It doesn’t necessarily have to be family members, it could be your closest friends, colleagues or even your healthcare team. The key is communication.

Family

Because it’s hereditary.

If you have ADPKD, chances are that someone in your family has it. ADPKD is a genetic disease, as such there is a possibility that you inherited the disease from one of your parents. If you want to better understand the genetics of ADPKD, you can always find genetics counsellors online or you can ask your doctor to refer you to one in your area.

Even within the same family, ADPKD can progress in different ways so don’t hesitate to talk to your family members. Their experience may help you during your treatment or your experience may help others.

Friends

Because that’s what friends are for.

If your family is unavailable or pressed for time, you can always reach out to your friends. They can offer you support and listen to what you have to say. It’s important to remember that they may not understand your condition, so you may have to explain your situation to them.

Children

Because they need to know.

Do you need to talk to your children about ADPKD? If so, here are some tips that may help:
– Cater to your child, you know what information they need to know

Employers

Because it’s your choice.
